Iowa Assigns Curry to Quad City, Walters to Alaska

DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa Wild General Manager Jim Mill announced on Thursday the American Hockey League club (AHL), has assigned goalie John Curry to the Quad City Mallards of the ECHL. The club also announced forward Ryan Walters has been assigned to the Alaska Aces, Iowa's ECHL affiliate.
Curry, 30 (2/27/84), made five appearances for Iowa this year, going 0-4-0 with a 3.72 GAA and a .885 SV%. He was 7-9-2 with a 2.62 goals-against average (GAA), a .930 save percentage (SV%) and one shutout in 19 games with the Iowa Wild last season. He signed a contract with Minnesota on Feb. 17, 2014 and appeared in two NHL games with the Wild, going 1-0-0 with a 3.00 GAA, and a .930 SV%. Curry made 43 saves in a 4-2 win vs. St. Louis on April 10, to claim his first NHL win since Nov. 11, 2008. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound netminder also posted a 10-2-0 record, 2.66 GAA and .917 SV% in 13 games with the Orlando Solar Bears (ECHL). He is 3-2-0 with a 3.55 GAA and a .893 SV% in six career NHL games. The native of Shorewood, Minn., played in four NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2008-10. Curry went 59-29-15 with a 2.07 GAA, a .923 SV% and 13 shutouts in 107 games during four seasons at Boston University from 2004-07.
The 23-year old Walters played in ten games for Iowa this year, scoring one goal and setting up five others for six points. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound forward turned pro last spring after completing a four-year career at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. From 2010-14, Walters skated in 152 games for UNO, scoring 50 goals and adding 84 assists for 134 points. As a junior, Walters was a Hobey Baker Award finalist (Top Collegiate Player), after he led the nation in scoring with 22 goals and 52 points in 39 games. In addition, he was named to the All-WCHA First Team and NCAA (West) Second All-American Team in 2012-13. He turned pro with the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers last spring. In 11 games with the Sound Tigers, Walters scored his first pro goal and added two assists for three points. Walters is no stranger to Iowa, having suited up for the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers from 2007-10. He scored 39 goals and totaled 108 points in 135 USHL games.
After stops in Rockford and Chicago next weekend, Iowa returns home at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23 to face Milwaukee. On Sunday fans can bring skates to take part in the postgame skate after the game, sponsored by Grip-Tite Foundation Repair. Fans are encouraged to bring canned foods to the game on Sunday to support a canned food drive presented by Fire Creek Grill. It's also a Subway Family Four Pack game, where fans may buy four tickets, four sodas and four hot dogs, starting at $48.
The Iowa Wild 2014-15 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center, it runs from October through April.
