Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento River Cats (63-49) pounded out 12 hits in their 7-2 victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes (53-59) on Wednesday afternoon at Raley Field, snapping their three-game losing streak.
The River Cats got to Isotopes starter Drew Carpenter (2-1, 7.76 ERA) early, picking up three runs in the first inning. Left fielder Shane Peterson smacked a single to right that plated Nick Buss, and designated hitter Nate Freiman followed with an RBI-single of his own to make it a 2-0 game. A sac-fly by second baseman Colin Walsh gave the Cats a three-run lead after the first.
Carpenter pitched four-plus innings, surrendering five runs - four earned - on six hits and five walks with four strikeouts, taking the loss for the Isotopes.
Albuquerque responded in the top of the third when first baseman Clint Robinson doubled home Carlos Triunfel off Sacramento starter Arnold Leon (10-5, 4.87 ERA).
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, River Cats shortstop Jake Elmore lofted a fly-ball that was misplayed by Isotopes right fielder Trayvon Robinson, allowing Anthony Aliotti to score from second to make it a 4-1 contest in favor of the Cats. Aliotti would draw a bases-loaded walk in the following inning to extend the lead to four.
The Isotopes cut the lead back to three in the top of the seventh on designated hitter Chone Figgins' infield-single to second base that scored Triunfel from third. Triunfel finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a triple.
Buss' two-run single in the bottom of the seventh made the score 7-2, and the Sacramento bullpen tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to keep Albuquerque from mounting any sort of comeback.
Leon earned the win for the River Cats, tying the Pacific Coast League-lead with 10 on the season. The right-hander worked 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with two walks and five punchouts.
Freiman collected three hits on the day, including an RBI, his 70th on the season. Aliotti finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk while Elmore went 2-for-5 with a run and two doubles.
Righty Deck McGuire (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his first-career start for the Sacramento River Cats against Zach Lee (6-9, 5.18 ERA) and the Albuquerque Isotopes on Miller Lite Thirsty Thursday at Raley Field with first pitch called for 7:05 p.m.
